How and where can I purchase tickets to an upcoming event?

The Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts is not a ticket outlet. Most of the organizations that hold events here sell tickets ahead of time or online through their websites. The best way to get ticket information is to call or email the sponsoring organization. Our website has active links to the majority of groups who perform here on a regular basis. If you cannot locate a phone number or email address for the sponsoring organization, e-mail me: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it In addition, most of the groups sell tickets prior to the performance at our box office, which is located to the right when you walk in the lobby doors.

I’m performing at the theatre. Where should I enter?

ALL performers should only enter at the stage door entrance, located to the left of the building near the roll top door adjacent to the football field. There is a doorbell, should the door be locked. HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE: Performers will only be permitted into the building during the contracted hours. If you arrive early and find the door unlocked and enter, your organization will be charged additional fees.

The only exception to the performer’s only entrance rule is for performers under the age of 18. HOWEVER, PARENTS AND GUARDIANS, PLEASE NOTE: you should drop performers off, check them in with adult chaperones and then exit the building via the stage door, entering again through the main theatre doors only when they are open to the public. Parents and guardians are not permitted to be backstage, should not be seating themselves inside the theatre from the stage, and are expected to pay for tickets unless they are volunteering with the sponsoring organization and have been granted an exception.

Can I wait in the lobby while my child is preparing for a performance?

NO. The lobby IS NOT open during rehearsal hours or prior to the theatre being opened to the public and should not be occupied. In addition, the main doors to the theatre SHOULD NOT BE USED to enter or exit prior to the theatre being open to the public.

How much does it cost to rent the space?

We have a four-hour minimum rental block of time. Rehearsal time costs $135/hour and performance time (any time you have guests in the building) costs $245/hour and $295/hour for non-profit organizations and for profit organizations, respectively. (Rehearsals have this four-hour minimum block as well, if they are separate from performance dates). This fee includes a House Manager, a Technical Director, and one security person. PLEASE NOTE: depending upon your requirements, additional technicians and security personnel may be required (this is the call of the Technical Director and Theatre Manager). Additional technicians and security personnel cost $22/hour per person. The regular rental comes with standard lighting. Any additional lighting will be extra. In addition, as of 1/1/09 there is a $40/hour energy fee which includes all of the JRT Theatre area and Main Street. This is a county mandate and non-negotiable. Please see Technical Specifications (main menu) and Procedures and Charges (downloadable forms) for more details. Should you have questions about the technical capabilities which are not answered in these documents, please e-mail our Technical Director: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Will I be charged if performers enter the building prior to the start time on the contract or if our event runs over the contracted hours?

If you enter the building prior to the contracted hours, your sponsoring organization will be charged the hourly rate, in half hour increments. If your event runs over the contracted hours, you will be charged the hourly rate, in half hour increments. For example, if you run over anywhere from 1-30 minutes, you will be charged an additional $122.50 or $147.50, for non-profit and for-profit organizations, respectively. Also, if you have additional technicians under contract, you will be charged for their time as well.

I’m interested in renting the space. Where do I begin?

  1. Check the calendar to see if the date(s) you are interested in are available.
  2. If they are, download the reservation request and reservation worksheet and fax them to: JRT, Betsy Fetchko, 410-313-6972.

A NOTE RE: SCHEDULING: Our calendar fills up very quickly due to numerous Wilde Lake events, our partnership with the Howard County Arts Council, and returning organizations. While I communicate with clients regularly about dates/availability, it is important to note that I cannot guarantee dates for the following year (example: Fall 08/Spring 09) until the Howard County Public School System calendar is solidified in June.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

Unfortunately, as we are a part of the Howard County Public School System, IF they are closed, we must close. If we have to cancel your event, we will do our best to pass along the information via a phone message, signage on the entrance doors, and a posting under the alert field on our website. If you want to reschedule and we can accommodate you, we will be happy to do our best. If we do not have available dates or you do not want to reschedule, we will refund your deposit with the possible exception of rental equipment specific to your event. The processing of this refund may take up to one month.

What happens if the JRT doesn’t have the equipment we need for our performance?

In most cases, we can rent any equipment you might need to ensure your show is a success, but there will be additional charges. We pass on the direct cost of the equipment rental and do not add any fees, unless there is a delivery charge.

Can we have balloons, glitter, confetti or candles/fireworks of any kind in the theatre?

No, never, ever. There are no exceptions to this rule.

We know we can’t eat or drink anything but water in the theatre area but have multiple performances or young children. What should we do?

If you inquire when you’re reserving the theatre, we can usually make the cafeteria available for a fee of $265. This cost is a combination of energy fees (the area is on a separate HVAC system than the theatre area) and rental/custodial fees. This is a cleaner and more appropriate area for food and snacks. Food and drinks are also allowed on Main Street, the brick area just after the restrooms, but please utilize trashcans. You may have receptions in the cafeteria but if your group wants to use any kitchen facilities, you must contact Chuck Parvis as the Board of Education ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and arrange that rental separately from our agreement.

What if we want to have a reception afterwards with food and drinks or sell food during intermission?

Main Street is available for receptions. We have eight 12’ long double tables (two connected) and can set them up to your liking, as long as you let us know ahead of time. In addition, we have a minimal amount of smaller round and octagonal tables (seat approx. 8). We can set up Main Street to your liking (providing a diagram is ideal), however there may be a minimal custodial fee depending upon the set up you desire. We do not, however, have tablecloths and they are cafeteria tables, so plan accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Food and drink MAY NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BE SOLD prior to OR after performances.

Why are you so rigid about the food and drink policy?

Because it costs $30,000 to replace the carpet. We are trying to maintain the space for all our clients and appreciate your consideration and adherence to our policies.

Thank you very much for considering the Jim Rouse Theater for the Performing Arts. It is our great pleasure to serve you and help ensure that your events are spectacular successes.
